Robin Gee, is an African American filmmaker, choreographer and performer and we are so excited to welcome her to Studio Faire as one of our first residents.

During her residency Robin will be developing [movement] material that will be the basis for a screen dance inspired by the environment in and around Nérac. She is also also looking to deepen her understanding of both French language and culture.

Robin is spending four weeks with us and we have already spent the evenings of the first week of her residency laughing, comparing notes on creative processes, walking together and laughing some more!

Even though she has a fantastic studio space at UNC Greensboro, where she is Associate professor, she often takes herself off to the gym to develop new work in one of their private spaces. It’s neccessary for her to remove herself from her place of work for the ideas to really start to flow, without distraction, both physical and mental. This is why a residency at Studio Faire is so valuable for her development at this point in time. A big step away from the norm, for a period of uninterrupted reflection and experimentation.

‘The Usher Hall’ is proving to be an ideal space for dance work, with it’s polished floorboards, open space, giant mirror and natural light … we are enjoying hearing the squeak of her feet on the wooden floors as she twists and turns to the sounds of opera.

I am interested in the intersection between the body and space – mediated and live performance.

I make work that explores this idea and utilizes environments that contribute richly to the contexts of the work.

I work with both text and ideation as a point of departure for developing work.

If you would like to meet Robin and hear more about her residency, as well as see some examples of her work, please pop in to Studio Faire on Friday 8th June between 16.00-20.00hr.
