Rob Kitsos
American Dance Artist
Rob Kitsos is an acclaimed dancer, dance instructor, performing artist and choreographer, living and working in Vancouver, Canada. His residency enabled him to develop his current line of research Moving Matter, a choreographic project that explores specific materials and spaces in-depth to inspire short film, installation and live performance. His focus was our Garage Studio and you can see some of the results of his residency ici (including a collaboration with poet and fellow resident, Winston Lê). He also spent time developing a complementary website for this project.

Winston Lê
Vietnamese-Chinese Poet
Travelling to France from Langley, Canada, Winston Lê’s residency gave him quiet time to focus on developing experimental poems inspired by the creative works of botanical artist, Katrina Vera Wong, who makes Frankenflora: imagined flower hybrids made from disparate parts of dried or pressed plants, creating new specimens that do not exist in nature. Through this collaboration, they aim to create a chapbook which combines his words and her constructions into Frankenflora Morphologues. He also spent time on a short collaboration with dancer and fellow resident Rob Kitsos (see above).

Noor van der Brugge
Artiste et écrivain néerlandais
Lors d'un congé sabbatique de son travail de professeur d'art, Noor van der Brugge a décidé de prendre le temps de se lancer dans un nouveau projet créatif : concevoir un livre d'artiste inspiré du poète et romancier anglais Philip Larkin. Les livres de Noor combinent texte et illustration afin d'approfondir l'expérience d'exploration de ses histoires. Sa résidence a donc été consacrée à la lecture et à la recherche, à l'écriture des premières ébauches et à la réalisation de croquis pour cette nouvelle œuvre.

Julie Price Carpenter
Écrivain américain
Julie Carpenter veut « plier la réalité une histoire à la fois », son dernier ouvrage étant un roman d’horreur sur l’enfer. En tant que sudiste de toujours et ancienne évangélique, elle se sent bien au fait du sujet ! Elle est également consciente qu’elle peut mieux écrire sur ces sujets lorsqu’elle est éloignée de ce monde et c’est ce qui l’a poussée à se tourner vers la France pour une résidence. Ses besoins étaient simples : un espace calme où elle pourrait travailler sans être dérangée tout au long de la journée et un espace pour se promener le soir. Elle a trouvé ça au Studio Faire.

Judy Major-Girardin
Artiste canadien
À travers son travail, Judy Major-Girardin s’efforce de sensibiliser à la beauté et à l’importance écologique de l’eau, de la terre, de la flore et de la faune. Judy a rassemblé des formes abstraites et reconnaissables de la rivière voisine Baïse, réalisant des croquis, prenant des photographies et collectant des plantes à rapporter au studio. En imprimant, peignant et superposant des tissus transparents et en cousant minutieusement avec des fils vibrants, Judy a créé des œuvres d’une profondeur semblable à celle de la rivière.

CL Fisher
Artiste canadien
CL Fisher est un artiste basé sur le code qui a étudié dans le cadre du programme Fine Arts Studio du Centennial College de Toronto. Avec une date limite imminente pour une exposition, CL a dû rester concentrée pendant sa résidence. Ses récentes visites au Royaume-Uni, où elle a parcouru le mur d'Hadrien (devant l'arbre de Sycamore Gap, aujourd'hui perdu aux mains des vandales), puis à Paris, « La Ville Lumière », ont offert l'inspiration et cette résidence l'espace de soutien pour compléter de nouveaux ouvrages à temps pour l'imprimeur.

Sara Gaines
Écrivain américain
Sara Ann Gaines est une écrivaine, artiste et praticienne chamanique qui crée des essais et des histoires à partir de souvenirs personnels. Des souvenirs spécifiques mais universels. Au cours de sa résidence, elle a continué à développer une collection d’essais et de nouvelles personnelles sur des « tranches de vie », qu’elle a accompagnées de croquis, d’illustrations et de photographies, semblables à un livre d’histoires pour enfants mais recontextualisées à travers une lentille adulte.

Ann Marti Friedman
Écrivain américain
Titulaire d'un doctorat. en histoire de l'art, avec un accent sur l'art français des XVIIe et XIXe siècles, il était parfaitement logique que la France soit le lieu idéal pour Ann Marti Friedman pour travailler sur son dernier roman historique. Bien qu'une grande partie de ce roman soit basée à Paris, une partie du roman se déroulera dans un château de campagne et le Lot-et-Garonne pourrait être la région dans laquelle le mettre en scène.

Katie Mawson
Artiste anglais
Fascinée par la couleur, Katie Mawson travaille avec les tissus des couvertures de livres vintage, en enlevant d'abord ces tissus magnifiquement marqués et décolorés de leurs planches pour ensuite organiser, combiner et équilibrer les formes et les combinaisons de couleurs dans de nouvelles œuvres d'art. Elle a passé ses matinées à se promener à Nérac, à s'imprégner et à photographier les couleurs et les textures de l'architecture française locale, avant de retourner dans son atelier pour passer du temps à arranger et réarranger une fois de plus.

Julie Bell
Artiste canadien
Changeant sa façon habituelle de travailler, créant des collages mixtes sur verre, Julie Bell s'est mise au défi de travailler sur papier et sur toile pendant sa résidence. Elle a développé plusieurs petites pièces, ainsi qu’une œuvre plus grande, ce qu’elle n’est pas en mesure de faire habituellement dans son petit studio au Canada. S'inspirant des textures locales de l'architecture, des marchés alimentaires, des interactions culturelles et des animaux de compagnie de la propriété, les œuvres réalisées comprenaient « Marché en Plein Air », « Comment Parler Français Aucun Comprend » et « Good Boy Dougie ».Marché en Plein Air“, “Comment Parler Francais Aucun Comprend” and “Good Boy Dougie“.

Rachel Jamison Webster
Écrivain américain
Rachel Jamison Webster est poète et auteure de fiction et de non-fiction créative. Ses œuvres comprennent ‘Benjamin Banneker and Us: Eleven Generations of an American Family’, un roman qui explore l'ascendance, la race, le sexe et la justice dans l'histoire américaine. Au cours de sa résidence, elle a continué à travailler sur ces thèmes pour un nouveau roman, cette fois axé sur ses ancêtres maternels, qui ont mené une vie libre en tant que féministes, artistes et personnes queer au XXe siècle.

Bailey Martin

Bailey Martin cherchait une résidence pour poursuivre son écriture créative après avoir obtenu une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l'Université de Boston. Son objectif ultime était de terminer son premier recueil de poésie, mais pour y parvenir, elle avait besoin d'un changement de rythme et de temps libre non structuré pour respirer, rassembler ses pensées et expérimenter.

Scott D. Peterson
Écrivain américain
Ayant combiné ses intérêts pour la littérature sportive, le journalisme sportif et l'histoire du sport pour obtenir un doctorat interdisciplinaire. Diplômé de littérature et de culture américaines à l'Université du Maine, Scott D. Peterson a continué à se concentrer sur le sport en tant qu'écrivain créatif, chercheur en médias et enseignant. Il a de nouveau consacré un temps spécifique à son écriture créative au Studio Faire, après une précédente résidence en 2022.

Chris Lock
Artiste britannique
Au cours de la résidence, Chris Lock a développé une série de petits livres en accordéon, travaillant avec un couteau à palette, de la peinture à l'huile soluble dans l'eau, de l'acrylique et de l'aquarelle pour créer des paysages vibrants et texturés sur papier, inspirés par les couleurs et la lumière du région. Ces petits livres contenaient également des fragments de textes inspirants de l'auteur Celia Rees et étaient complétés par des pièces de début et de fin en bois de balsa.

Johanna Pfau
Costumier et scénographe allemand
Johanna adorait le jardin du Studio Faire et passait la majorité de son temps dehors, perdue dans son histoire fascinante, afin de créer un mémoire illustré. Tout au long du processus d’écriture, l’histoire a commencé à changer. De vrais souvenirs mélangés à des détails et des personnages inventés. L'histoire commence lorsque le personnage principal a 6 ans et se termine quelques années après qu'elle ait 11 ans, lorsque ses parents l'ont emmenée avec son frère d'Allemagne de l'Est, où elle vivait, en vacances en Hongrie. Ils ne sont jamais revenus.

Suki Valentine
Artiste américain
Tarotiste professionnelle, militante de première ligne, l'une des fondatrices de Riot Grrrl, métallurgiste et joaillière, Suki Valentine a de nombreuses sources d'inspiration. Pendant leur séjour, Suki a particulièrement profité du soleil de l'été français pour créer ses propres designs pour un jeu de cartes Lenormand Oracle, créées en tirages Cyanotype. Ces cartes ont été créées à l'origine par Marie Anne Lenormand, une diseuse de bonne aventure française de l'époque napoléonienne.

Emily Flouton

La résidence a permis à Emily Flouton de mettre son travail littéraire au centre de sa journée, où elle doit généralement partager son temps entre son travail d'écrivain indépendant et de professeur d'écriture depuis son domicile de Brooklyn, New York. Son roman sur le passage à l'âge adulte combine une représentation réaliste de la vie en internat avec des éléments d'un roman de maison hantée. Il était écrit et prêt pour la révision finale et la résidence a offert l'occasion idéale pour une réflexion et un reconsidération tranquilles.

Patrick Schmidt

Travailler en tant que professeur d'art au Washington & Jefferson College occupe une grande partie du temps de Patrick Schmidt pendant le trimestre, donc pendant les mois d'été, il fait de la place pour les voyages et une exploration continue de la relation entre la couleur et le motif et leur relation avec les facteurs culturels et sociaux. identité, à travers la peinture géométrique abstraite. Andrew J Rodriguez est un cinéaste dominicain du Bronx, dont le travail s'efforce de "démystifier les expériences des communautés mal desservies à travers des histoires nuancées et axées sur les personnages avec une touche de réalisme magique". Pendant sa résidence, il a terminé une ébauche du scénario de son long métrage sur un jeune garçon dominicain qui est contraint de quitter l'école après la révocation de sa citoyenneté dominicaine en raison de son ascendance haïtienne.

Encouraged by feedback for her final piece of work created for an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Toronto, Sabryna Ekstein dived headlong into developing the work into a full blown novel, which she completed during her residency! With a keen interest in writing articles about food and beer (currently she’s the food and beer writer for The Growler, Ontario’s only craft beer magazine) food often plays a central part in her narratives, as is the case in this novel about a host at a four-star restaurant in downtown Toronto.

Garry Craig Powell

Garry Craig Powell s'est rendu au Studio Faire depuis son domicile au Portugal pour travailler sur son troisième livre, un roman historique sur « Une histoire d'amour entre deux egos monstrueux », le couple de célébrités Gabriele D'Annunzio, un écrivain italien, qui occupait une place de choix. dans la littérature italienne de 1889 à 1910, et Eleonora Duse, actrice, particulièrement réputée pour ses rôles dans ses pièces.

Jane Tolerton

De retour pour sa deuxième résidence au Studio Faire, Jane Tolerton s'est cette fois concentrée sur la biographie de Mary Taylor, une femme née dans le West Yorkshire, en Angleterre, en 1817. Mary Taylor était une amie de toujours de Charlotte Brontë et a écrit son propre roman, Miss Miles, ou A Tale of Yorkshire Life 60 Years Ago. Grâce à ses recherches approfondies, le livre de Jane Tolerton vise à mettre en évidence certaines fausses histoires autour de la vie de Mary.

Christina Burtner
Artiste et écrivain américano/chinois
Christina Burtner a pris congé de son travail de photographe commerciale, graphiste et productrice vidéo pour se concentrer sur un projet personnel. Habituellement, ses œuvres créatives prennent la forme de peintures qui dépeignent des histoires à travers des arrangements de jouets et d'articles ménagers dans des dioramas éclairés de façon spectaculaire, mais ce projet était différent ! La résidence a permis à Christina d'écrire un roman très personnel basé sur sa propre crise de la quarantaine.

Elizabeth Rosen

Après une longue période d'études, au cours de laquelle elle obtient un M.F.A. en création littéraire et un doctorat en littérature, Liz Rosen est revenue à sa véritable passion pour l'écriture de nouvelles. Neuf ans plus tard, elle a commencé à reconnaître la nécessité de pratiquer la forme longue et a donc décidé de créer une collection d'histoires qui fonctionneraient ensemble comme un cycle d'histoires et c'est ce qui est devenu son objectif pendant sa résidence.

Alex Palumbo
Cinéaste et Photographe américain
Alex Palumbo est un directeur de la photographie et photographe indépendant avec sa propre société, Slack Tide Films, basée à San Diego, en Californie. En plus de son travail commercial pour des clients tels que Spotify et Harley-Davidson, Alex crée des films narratifs sur des personnes ou des histoires qui, selon lui, devraient être racontées. Alex a loué un vélo pendant sa résidence et, en plus de rattraper son retard sur certains travaux de montage existants, a passé plusieurs heures à documenter le paysage environnant et le temps dramatique du printemps.

Deborah Whitney

Lorsque Deborah Whitney est arrivée pour la première fois au Studio Faire pour une résidence d'un mois en 2019, nous sommes devenus de grands amis, nous avons donc été ravis de l'accueillir à nouveau en 2023. Son projet cette fois était de créer des motifs de broderie sur des mouchoirs en lin vintage. Mettant en lumière des éléments de femmes burlesques, Deborah attire l'attention sur le concept de "regard masculin", le prétendu pouvoir que les hommes ont sur les femmes. "Les femmes burlesques soutiennent que le pouvoir leur appartient, qu'en choisissant la scène, elles ont défié les normes sociales et de genre pour s'affirmer et affirmer leur corps."

Triin Paja

Triin Paja est une poétesse primée, qui aimait particulièrement regarder par la fenêtre depuis son «coin d'écriture» (The Bureau), alors qu'elle travaillait sur son nouveau recueil de poésie au Studio Faire. Elle a également été surprise d'être inspirée pour écrire une histoire courte, un domaine qu'elle avait rarement exploré par l'écriture auparavant. Nous sommes reconnaissants au Cultural Endowment of Estonia de l'avoir soutenue pendant 3 semaines à Studio Faire.

Sonia Zaghetto
Écrivain brésilien
Sonia Zaghetto est une journaliste et écrivaine brésilienne, désormais basée à San José, mais née dans la région amazonienne du Brésil. C'est cette saga de l'émigration de sa famille vers la région amazonienne (le territoire d'outre-mer, la Guyane française), qui fait l'objet du roman sur lequel elle travaillait pendant sa résidence. Du temps a été passé à réfléchir aux intrigues, à affiner les personnages et à créer les arcs dramatiques qui relient les 20 nouvelles pour raconter cette histoire fascinante.

Linus Wever Andersson
Artiste & Luthier suédois/allemand
Alors qu'il étudiait la philosophie à Berlin, Linus a rencontré un luthier en faisant de l'auto-stop et, à peine quatre mois plus tard, il a pris la décision de déménager au Royaume-Uni pour étudier à la Newark School of Violin Making, d'où il a obtenu son diplôme avec distinction. Maintenant basé à Glasgow, il travaille ses violons tout en étudiant pour un MFA. Au cours de sa résidence, il a partagé son temps entre la sculpture d'un manche de violon et la création de dessins délicats pour un roman graphique.

Bing Chen
Artiste chinois
Bing Chen a commencé sa carrière créative en tant que sculpteur céramiste en Chine, travaillant dans la production de céramique, mais a déménagé en Écosse pour étudier à la Glasgow School of Art d'où elle a obtenu un BA Hons in Sculpture & Environmental Art et un MFA. La familiarité de Bing avec l'argile et son intérêt pour l'utilisation de matériaux naturels trouvés l'ont amenée à créer plusieurs installations spécifiques au site dans notre parc pendant sa résidence. Melissa Aranzamendez
Écrivain américain/philippin
Bien que Melissa Aranzamendez passe une grande partie de son temps à travailler à l'intersection de la technologie et des sciences humaines, à développer des solutions éthiques vers une IA responsable, sa formation et sa passion contrastées sont pour l'écriture créative, en mettant l'accent sur les expériences des Philippins et d'autres immigrants en Amérique, de un point de vue personnel et partagé. Ses nouvelles se concentrent sur les malades mentaux, l'aide domestique, les travailleurs étrangers à l'étranger,… selon ses mots : les personnes invisibles dans la société.

Steph Del Rosso
Écrivain américain
Steph Del Rosso est un dramaturge, un écrivain de cinéma et de télévision et un éducateur, enseignant actuellement l'écriture dramatique à l'Université de New York à New York. Son travail a été produit ou développé dans plusieurs théâtres à travers les États-Unis et a remporté le Steinberg Playwright Award, récompensant des dramaturges en début de carrière au talent exceptionnel en 2020. Sa résidence a permis de se concentrer sur une série de dramas sombres et humoristiques. des histoires courtes, qui ont exploré les dynamiques de pouvoir sexospécifiques et le mythe de la méritocratie.

Hannah Terwin

Une résidence au Studio Faire s'est avérée être la pause dont Hannah Terwin avait besoin de son travail dans le Michigan en tant que photographe de mariage professionnelle, lui permettant de se concentrer sur sa photographie d'art pendant une courte période. S'inspirant des contes de fées et du folklore, Hannah a développé une série d'œuvres utilisant la maison, les jardins et la ville comme décors de ses histoires visuelles.

Victoria Dickenson
Écrivain canadien
Victoria Dickenson a beaucoup travaillé dans plusieurs musées au Canada, notamment pendant onze ans à titre de directrice générale du Musée McCord d'histoire canadienne à Montréal. Elle a organisé de nombreuses expositions et a beaucoup écrit sur l'art documentaire et la visualisation du paysage en Amérique du Nord. Au cours de sa résidence, elle s'est concentrée sur ses mémoires culinaires, un récit de la façon dont elle et sa famille ont cuisiné et mangé des années 1950 au début des années 2000.

Anna Tregloan
Artiste australien
Anna Tregloan a travaillé à la fois dans le costume et la scénographie ainsi que dans l'intervention et l'installation pour des galeries et des musées. Elle est en phase de développement d'une nouvelle œuvre "Tending to the ice" et c'est sur cela qu'elle s'est concentrée au Studio Faire. Anna écrivait et réfléchissait à la glace, tandis que d'étranges installations gelées fondaient dans les dépendances et le jardin, leurs transformations filmées pour un développement futur.

Shanna McNair

Shanna McNair est directrice fondatrice des conférences d'écrivains The Writer's Hotel et travaille avec des écrivains pour développer leur art, trouver un agent ou un éditeur et commercialiser leur travail. Elle est également rédactrice fondatrice et éditrice de la revue littéraire The New Guard, qui publie des écrivains émergents et établis des États-Unis et de l'étranger. Mais Shanna est également une écrivaine à part entière et, pendant sa résidence, a retravaillé et achevé deux romans qu'elle avait développés et mis en page et édité son recueil de poésie.

Au cours de sa courte résidence, elle a travaillé pendant de nombreuses heures en incorporant des broderies individuelles et des éléments tricotés, sur lesquels elle travaillait depuis plusieurs mois, dans un travail à grande échelle (détail illustré), nous donnant un aperçu de certaines de ses pensées et expériences.

Isabella Welch est une écrivaine, rédactrice et productrice basée en Californie. Elle vient également de terminer son premier roman ! Le temps passé au Studio Faire a été consacré à la révision et à l'édition de son manuscrit, tout en prenant le temps de se concentrer sur l'envoi d'une section à des éditeurs sélectionnés, avant de retourner à San Francisco pour poursuivre son travail éditorial créatif une fois de plus.

Jess Dunn
Scénariste et réalisateur américain
Tout ce dont Jess Dunn avait besoin pour se concentrer sur son nouveau pilote de film était une pièce avec vue, une brise sur son visage et un peu de temps loin de sa vie trépidante à Brooklyn, New York. Elle a trouvé cela au Bureau, où elle a travaillé longuement et durement pour réviser le nouveau scénario et l'arc de l'histoire de la saison. Jocelyn Benford

Peindre tous les jours, peu importe où elle se trouve, c'est l'engagement que Jocelyn Benford a pris envers son art. Ses œuvres abstraites, principalement à l'aquarelle avec des éléments de techniques mixtes, se concentrent sur trois thèmes principaux, qu'elle nomme : l'équilibre, la flottabilité et la floraison. Ce sont le paysage, le feuillage et les couleurs qui l'ont le plus inspirée lors de sa résidence de deux semaines dans le sud-ouest de la France.

Megan de Guzman
Scénariste américain
Scénariste émergente basée à Brooklyn, New York, Megan de Guzman est arrivée en France avec un carnet rempli d'idées de films et une autorisation personnelle pour expérimenter, jouer et lâcher prise ! Elle a estimé que le fait d'avoir l'opportunité d'échanger des idées quotidiennement avec d'autres praticiens de la création, qui n'étaient pas uniquement des écrivains et des scénaristes, était d'une grande valeur et elle est partie avec le sentiment que son séjour à Studio Faire avait été extrêmement productif.

Allison Kingsbury (Ali Seegar)
écrivain britannique
Allison Kingsbury, ou Ali Seegar comme son nom de plume, a fait une courte pause dans sa vie au Luxembourg afin de se concentrer sur sa nouvelle série de romans pour jeunes adultes, avant de commencer un cours en ligne avec l'école d'écriture créative basée à Londres, Curtis Brown Creative. Écrire pour ce groupe d'âge est une nouvelle aventure pour elle, car ses deux premiers romans (sur un garçon nommé Tommy Turner) s'adressent à un public beaucoup plus jeune, donc avoir ce temps consacré à travailler sur l'intrigue et les profils des personnages était inestimable.

Emily Adele Williams
Musicien australienne
Emily Williams est une violoncelliste et improvisatrice, qui a passé du temps en résidence à concevoir de nouvelles œuvres en utilisant un violoncelle amplifié et effectué avec un ordinateur portable pour créer des paysages sonores atmosphériques sincèrement émouvants. Emily a une passion particulière pour les spectacles dans les grottes et, lors de son passage en France, a joué dans les grottes de Bédeilhac et de Presque. Elle s'est également produite deux fois à Nérac, à la Salle des Ecuyers sous le château et à La Taverne d'Henri, accompagnant des visuels créés par l'artiste en résidence Grace Marquez.

Grace Marquez
Artiste canadien/philippin
Les œuvres d'art de Grace Marquez s'inspirent du monde sous-marin et elle a préparé sa résidence (un temps désigné pour développer de nouvelles peintures) avec un voyage préalable dans les vallées du Célé et du Lot, où elle a rassemblé des séquences vidéo tout en plongeant dans diverses grottes. Elle a créé plusieurs peintures inspirées par ces images et les a partagées, combinées à certaines de ses images de film, lors d'un public événement à Nérac, avec l'accompagnement au violoncelle de sa colocataire Emily Adele Williams.

Charlotte Paillieux

Écrivant habituellement des scénarios pour des films français, des téléfilms et des prises de vue réelles (Canal +), Charlotte Paillieux aspirait à s'éloigner de son travail pour développer des idées pour un mémoire très personnel, initié par une expérience traumatisante passée. Tout ce dont elle avait besoin était une chambre privée et isolée avec vue, dans un environnement favorable loin de sa vie professionnelle trépidante à Paris. Elle a trouvé tout cela, ainsi que de nouvelles amitiés, au cours de sa résidence de quatre semaines au Studio Faire.

Claire Murray
Artiste britannique
Voyager en train du Yorkshire à Nérac a donné à Claire Murray l'occasion de commencer ses recherches pour sa résidence avant son arrivée et elle a passé le voyage et ses premiers jours au Studio Faire à observer le paysage local et à réfléchir à notre environnement, au changement climatique, à la liberté de mouvement, les frontières et les préoccupations politiques. L'été dur et chaud avait laissé sa marque sur la terre, qui avait l'air brûlée, stérile et poussiéreuse, les couleurs blanchies, pâles et cassantes et c'est devenu un centre d'inspiration pour ses peintures.

Musicien néerlandais
La carrière de Lien Cornelissen a pris un énorme changement de direction d'avocat à auteur-compositeur et interprète il y a environ cinq ans et elle n'a jamais regardé en arrière! Embauchant un clavier pour la durée de sa résidence, Lien a rempli le studio de sa voix puissante et de son piano joyeux, alors qu'elle composait de nouvelles paroles et de nouveaux airs pour son troisième album et sa production de théâtre musical, s'inspirant du corps physique et du vocabulaire associé en néerlandais et anglais.

Avec un amour de toujours pour l'écriture, la langue et la littérature, ainsi qu'une passion pour le travail avec les jeunes, Sheila McGrory passe la plupart de son temps à se concentrer sur son travail en tant que professeur d'anglais et doyenne à l'école de Madère en Virginie, aux États-Unis. Cependant, une résidence de 2 semaines au Studio Faire s'est avérée être l'espace idéal pour encourager sa poésie émotive à couler à nouveau d'elle et elle a trouvé que son temps en résidence était "incroyablement productif".

Natalie McIlroy
Artiste écossais
Natalie McIlroy a fait une courte pause dans sa vie actuelle en tant que mère de deux enfants et administratrice de la Central Scotland School of Jewellery à Dunblane, pour reprendre sa vie d'artiste visuelle en résidence au Studio Faire, profitant du soleil français pour explorer des idées grâce à l'impression cyanotype. Le travail de Natalie couvre de nombreux médiums, du film/installation aux livres d'artistes, mais le "site" est toujours sa première considération, s'épanouissant avec l'espace traditionnel de la galerie de cubes blancs et se délectant de célébrer des espaces auparavant méconnus ou cachés.

Nora J. Bonner
Écrivain et musicien américain
Nora J. Bonner est une conteuse et auteur-compositeur-interprète, et pendant sa résidence, les matins ont trouvé le jardin rempli de ses compositions pour voix et guitare alors qu'elle travaillait sur sa comédie musicale solo. Nora enseigne la composition à la Georgia State University, l'écriture créative au Agnes Scott College et la littérature et la composition pour Life Le projet Chillon de l'Université, dans un établissement pour femmes à sécurité maximale en Géorgie du Nord. Cette résidence a été une pause bienvenue dans son travail d'enseignante pour se concentrer sur ce projet créatif qui bouillonnait en elle depuis un certain temps.

Ellen Bleiwas

La formation préalable d'Ellen Bleiwas en architecture est fondamentale pour sa pratique d'artiste multimédia, qui sous-tend son œuvre par une appréciation du « potentiel expérientiel de l'espace » et a conduit à des œuvres telles que des sculptures géantes créées à partir de feutre industriel qui plongent le spectateur dans leur labyrinthe comme forme. Pendant sa résidence au Studio Faire, l'objectif d'Ellen était de "se plonger dans la lenteur". Cela s'est développé, en partie, en une documentation photographique horaire du ciel sur une période de 12 heures.

Kimberlea Bass

Kimberlea Bass a pris une pause dans son travail de professeur d'art au Texas pour se concentrer sur sa propre pratique créative. Au cours de sa résidence, ses œuvres ont pris la forme de collages et d'objets trouvés retravaillés, trouvés en passant au peigne fin les brocanteurs locaux à la recherche de trésors cachés. La base de son travail est souvent basée sur la photographie en tant que concept large, utilisant la mécanique d'un appareil photo pour inspirer la forme et la forme, et un film photographique pour rappeler des souvenirs, Kimberlea tisse et superpose des supports mixtes pour créer de nouvelles pièces texturales.

How could Catherine Butterfield have predicted how enormously she would be influenced by the history of this region for her next creation? Fascinated by the story of Margaret of Valois, the first wife of Henry IV of France, whom he married in 1572, Catherine set about learning as much as she could to unveil her truth and retell her story with great wit and affection. Catherine wrote the full outline for a new screenplay in just two weeks, directly inspired by the experience of being in this royal city of Nèrac.

Heureusement, le soleil ne l'a pas déçue et, grâce à sa productivité et à son dévouement louables, Cassandra a créé quatre fois plus de tirages qu'elle ne l'avait initialement prévu.

Une résidence de deux semaines au Studio Faire était une période idéale loin de sa vie trépidante et de son travail quotidien à Brooklyn, pour que Jerry Sticker se concentre sur la version finale de son dernier roman. Scott D. Peterson est un artiste interdisciplinaire et un universitaire passionné de baseball ! Fine artiste, Rachael Van Dyke a passé deux semaines incroyablement productives en résidence au Studio Faire. Elle a passé du temps à marcher dans les rues de Nérac et des villages voisins, et à parcourir le paysage à vélo en observant et en s'imprégnant des couleurs, des textures et des formes de la région. Elle retournait chaque jour dans son atelier, pleinement inspirée et prête à mettre son énergie dans des peintures abstraites gestuelles, pleines de couleurs et de vie.

American Ceramic Sculptor
Julia Feld’s patient and observant nature was seen reflected in her work whilst in residence at Studio Faire, creating drawings to be later transferred onto her ceramic sculptures. She observed the development of Spring through photography on her daily walks around the town and experimented with different drawing and watercolour techniques. Lucille Dawson
American Writer & Executive Theatre Director
Writer Lucille Dawson spent four weeks with us. She is the executive director at Hand2Mouth theatre ensemble in Portland, Oregon.
Her residency at Studio Faire involved her writing her debut novel. A young adult novel about facing life after death.
Lucille was based in The Usher Hall here at Studio Faire where she wrote daily as well as enjoying the sights, sounds and tastes of Nérac.

Artist Collette Broeders spent two weeks at Studio Faire. Collette is a passionate mixed media artist merging traditional processes with new media and performance.
The Canadian artist spent a very productive time with us working in the garage studio from dusk ’til dawn. We also enjoyed an open studio day where she was able to show and talk about her work with the local community.

Olivia Jampol
American Actor, Writer & Filmmaker
Olivia Jampol came to Studio Faire to work on her screenplay. Olivia is a bilingual actor, writer and filmmaker from Brooklyn, New York.
She grew up on a coffee farm in Costa Rica and attended Harvard University, where she studied Filmmaking and Literature. She now lives in Brooklyn with her cat, Remy Ma.
She was more than prolific whilst here in Nérac completing the second draft of her movie screenplay.

Beth Cramer came to Studio Faire to work on the second draft of her second novel, still not knowing how this story would end. Her first novel is a memoir about confronting a diagnosis of stage 4 ovarian cancer. In ‘Why Didn’t I Notice Her Before?’ she documents her experience as a mother, wife, sister and daughter through her diagnosis. Open, honest and witty! During her two week residency Beth found the ending she was looking for.

Lene Helmer Nielsen
Danish Textile Artist & Weaver
Lene Helmer Nielsen spent four weeks at Studio Faire experiencing the temperature sinking from over 30 degrees to the low 20s. She hired a bike and cycled the streets, drawing inspiration from the patterns and colours of the old buildings, their roofs, their doors and the streets they sat on. This fed directly into her beautiful embroidery works on paper, created with watercolour, tulle fabric and linen threads.

Abby Schreiber was the Executive Editor at PAPER Magazine where she oversaw the publication’s quarterly print issues top to bottom, writing and editing stories in the entertainment, fashion, internet culture, politics and activism realms, among others. In addition to PAPER, she has written for publications like New York Magazine, Numéro, Vogue, BlackBook et VICE. During her micro-residency at Studio Faire she worked on two fictional screenplays, making great progress on both projects.

Lucy Moir
Australian Performer & Writer
Lucy Moir performs on stage and screen, with credits including ‘The Dressmaker’, ‘Lion’, ‘That’s Not Me’ and ‘Maybe Tomorrow’. She is also a playwright and the focal-point of her residency was to develop her play, ‘Write Loud and Clear About What Hurts’, into a mini-series. The play, which focuses on the developing relationship of a therapist and her demanding patient, was first performed by Lucy and Debra Lawrance at the Melbourne International Fringe Festival in 2018 to glowing reviews.

Martin Seneviratne
Australian Doctor & Writer
Though Martin Seneviratne spends his working life as a research scientist at Google Health in London, building algorithms and writing papers that try to push the boundary of what is possible with AI, he also likes to find creative outlets, mainly through writing. He predominantly writes fiction and poetry, typically inspired by medical experiences or the ethical dilemmas of artificial intelligence. He is currently writing a middle-grade fiction series, ‘Ancient Geeks’ in collaboration with his wife, Krystal Sutherland, who was Writer-in-Residence simultaneously.

Celie Byrne

Celie Byrne is a Fine Art Painter, whose work incorporates characterful portraits, giant murals and installation-based art. Celie’s portrait of her son ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ was selected for the BP Portrait Award Exhibition in 2011 and this led to her being invited to contribute her voice and lyrics to ‘The Grand Gestures’ (see link below). Celie’s short residency gave her the opportunity to step away from her daily obligations and to take a moment to reflect on her ongoing practice.

Kate Corroon Skakel

Multimedia artist, Kate Corroon Skakel came to Studio Faire from Brooklyn, NY, with a focused goal, to create several site specific installations plus full body cyanotypes and to exhibit these at the property towards the end of her 4-week residency. Unfortunately her residency was cut short by the Coronavirus Pandemic and she was unable to complete all planned works. However, she developed multiple ideas and successfully completed one installation, ‘Murmurations’, consisting of a video projection onto small pieces of fabric which mimicked the coordinated movement of birds.

Krystal Sutherland
Australian Writer
Krystal Sutherland’s first novel, ‘Our Chemical Hearts’, was published in over 20 countries. Amazon Studios produced the film adaptation and Krystal served as an executive producer on the project. She has subsequently become interested in developing her screenwriting skills so she can adapt her own work from book to screen and it was this that she focused on at Studio Faire, telling us that she’d had a real breakthrough moment during her residency! Her third novel, ‘House of Hollow’, will be published by Penguin in 2021.

Deepa Paulus – ദീപ പൗലോസ്
American Artist & Musician
Using elements of her Indian culture, as well as her digital skills, Deepa Paulus creates mixed media drawings. She also plays Indian drums called the tabla which she is studying professionally with a guru. Deepa chose to use her residency at Studio Faire to take a break from her usual work on the Imaging Team at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) and to focus on her two creative passions, music and drawing.

Laurene Vaughan

Laurene Vaughan came to Studio Faire to find a quiet interior space, where she could write and sketch, and a familiar yet foreign exterior space, where she could walk, observe and document moments. Her initial intentions were to create a hybrid piece of non-fiction writing incorporating both images and text. What she was drawn to in particular were the fragments of history, still visible within the walls of the building and the patterns and sounds of Nérac.

Dawn van de Schoot
Canadian Actor & Writer
The main aim of Dawn van de Schoot’s residency was to complete the first draft of her screenplay entitled Thicker than oil, an adaptation of a novel by Calgary writer Sarah Kades. The story revolves around a man, who is the CEO of an Oil Company, and his environmentalist daughter. It is set amongst the drama of the high powered oil industry and the delicacy of the northern Alberta landscapes. Dawn knew that, by removing herself from this setting and allowing herself time to focus on this story from afar, she would be able to reflect on her home environment with a more open minded perspective.

Camila Galaz
Australian Artist
Camila Galaz came to Studio Faire for the opportunity to focus on a film installation, which she is developing with the support of an M-Power mentorship award from the National Gallery of Victoria. Camila needed the space and time to focus on the post-production of this two-channel video installation, which is based on a 1986 French TV documentary about the MAPU-Lautaro, a Chilean student resistance group that her father was a member of, who fought against the Pinochet dictatorship. The video piece will be edited during a residency at EMPAC, New York.

Amanda Adam

In 2018 Amanda Adam made the decision to embark on a 10 month journey, which took her as far as Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, before heading back to Europe to culminate this journey with a month long artist residency in Nérac. During this residency she created vibrant, abstract landscape paintings on old bedsheets, embracing the memories these sheets held of their past owners. Siliang Ma – 马 司 亮
Chinese Photographer
During his residency at Studio Faire, Siliang Ma played with found objects in various isolated locations around the building, creating installations, which he then photographed. Siliang Ma’s photographs have nothing to do with reality, rather, they are a tool to create ‘idealised unreality by manipulating realistic symbols’. By modifying spaces and arranging objects to create installations, he implies a story, an activity, a symbol or metaphor, and the meaning of the image is left up to the viewer. Frances Ryan

Frances Ryan was invited for a 4-week residency at Studio Faire after one of her works was spotted in Edinburgh, Scotland at the Visual Arts Scotland Annual Exhibition. Frances predominantly makes collages and mixed media works, which illustrate stories and histories. Whilst in Nérac, she was particularly drawn to the local legend of Fleurette, a young woman who had a brief relationship with King Henry IV, who soon abandoned her and she drowned herself. This story touched Frances and inspired a series of collage works.

Marie-Josée Poisson
Québec Writer
Marie-Josée Poisson arrived at Studio Faire with an impending deadline for the third in her trilogy of novels to be delivered to her publisher. She was in need of time and space to focus on her final edit of ‘Liées par le sang – Volume 3’ without her normal day to day distractions. She found this at Studio Faire. Also, as Marie-Josée’s novels are, in part, set in France, Nérac proved an ideal location for her to immerse herself in French culture.

Julie Weaverling

Julie Weaverling’s goal for her residency was to really stretch her creative process, to step out of her comfort zone and take risks, to make expressive, non-objective, abstract paintings directly inspired by the colours, textures and tones of the local area. And she did! Julie painted a great number of new large scale canvases during her 2 week stay and still managed to squeeze in a few outings with Colin, Julia and the other residents to explore the local villages and soak in the colours of the French countryside.

Alyse Dietel
American Illustrator
Through her line drawings, Alyse Dietel highlights the beauty of our natural world, in the hope that this will help to instil a desire to conserve and protect it. As Alyse is a self-taught artist, one of her aims for this residency was to gain a greater understanding of and involvement with the art world by immersing herself in a creative environment alongside other international practitioners. Alyse felt that she thrived in our ‘personable and easygoing’ environment, producing more ambitious works than before, with greater confidence in her artistic ability.

Miguel Guerrero Becerra

Even though Miguel Guerrero Becerra initially started working towards a memoir of his childhood, the influence of his favourite Latino authors kept veering him towards fiction and, during his 4-week residency, Miguel focused on writing his first novel, ‘set in the nameless small town where his grandmother lives and cries at funerals for a precarious income’. His novel follows the coming-of-age story of a ‘nameless boy whose heart bursts out of his body right after his mother stabs his father in the eye and abandons him in the middle of the forest.’

Peta Berghofer
Australian Ceramic Artist
Having successfully secured a Bellmaine French Appreciation Travelling Scholarship from the University of Southern Queensland, Peta Berghofer was able to enjoy a funded residency with us. The scholarship aims to support further study and practice development whilst connecting with French culture and people. Peta decided to focus her residency on developing new design ideas for her functional and sculptural ceramic works, as well as updating her website and spending time under Colin’s tuition to improve her photography skills.

Naomi Washer
American Writer & Translator
Naomi Washer focused her four week residency on completing a novel that she had already started with the assistance of a grant from the Vermont Studio Center. She describes the novel as ‘a work of women’s autofiction, written in fragments that shift between a fictional narrative and an essay on the nature of autofiction’. As part of the novel is set in France where the narrator has traveled to complete work on a book-length translation, writing this in Nérac was immensely helpful for Naomi, as she was able to immerse herself in the French language and culture.

Pamela Heck
American Artist & Writer
The fact that Studio Faire offers residencies for both artists and writers was one of the main attractions for Pamela Heck, as she is active in both areas herself as an award-winning artist and a published author of memoir, short story, poetry and children’s picture books. It was the latter that she came to Nérac to work on. An alphabet book for children titled ‘Amazing Animals: Fun Facts from A to Z’. As Pamela had already written the text for the book, she spent her time planning the double page layouts and creating the illustrations. She also worked with Colin to learn a few Adobe InDesign tricks, to assist her in getting the book printer-ready.

Johanna Naukkarinen
Finnish Artist & Photographer
In Johanna Naukkarinen’s current project, she draws connections between historical and contemporary images of women, in particular, looking for similarities between the hysteria imagery born in 19th century Parisian hospital La Salpêtrière and contemporary images of women in popular culture. During her 3-week residency she focused on developing this project through digital drawing, alongside collecting source material for new works using uses photography and image montage. Our black Labrador Dougie became her muse for the duration!

Caroline Kinkead

As a recent graduate from Concordia University in Montreal Canada, Caroline Kinkead was searching for a micro-residency that would allow her a short break from her daily routine as a mother of a young child, in order to continue to develop her painting skills. During her 1-week residency, Caroline worked on a small painted canvas depicting the ‘Pavillon des Bains du Roy’ in Nérac.

Although Étienne is not a practicing artist, he is a talented draftsman and lover of painting, writing and reading. He applied to Studio Faire for a 1-week residency to accompany his partner Caroline Kinkead (see above), and to take some time away from the city to enjoy the fresh air in the garden at Studio Faire, whilst sketching the house and working on his doctorate project.

Hazel Kelly enjoys creating narratives and characters, and spent her micro-residency at Studio Faire working on a piece for a stand up routine, as well as exploring the area with her camera and modelling for Jennifer Kelly’s clay bust (see below).

Jennifer Kelly

During Jennifer Kelly’s 1 week residency she spent time in the studio creating a clay bust of her daughter Hazel (above). With tongue sticking out and eyes tightly closed, the predominant aim was to express emotion. Jennifer’s series of clay busts are inspired by the work of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, a German-Austrian sculptor from the 18th century, most famous for his “character heads”, ‘a collection of busts with faces contorted in extreme facial expressions’.

Jane Tolerton

Biographer, journalist and historian, Jane Tolerton spent her month at Studio Faire digging deeply into the history of New Zealand suffragists who won their campaign for the women’s vote within a quarter of a century – in stark contrast to many other countries. She is writing a book that will re-spin the suffrage story in the light of research that has revealed that there were three distinct movements for the vote, all of which contained both women and men.

The river Baïse was the focus for Colin Andrew’s 2-week residency and he spent his days walking and paddling sections of it’s course, observing and recording life around and on the river. Following the residency, he returned to his home in Scotland to review, edit and transform his film clips and stills into a ‘poetic exploration of water, flow, level and the importance of waterways to community’.

For Canadian Web Designer, Alana Dawes, the opportunity to visit Studio Faire to develop her photography skills in portraiture and still life was invaluable. She worked with Colin Usher (our in-house Photography tutor) over the course of the week long residency, particularly focusing on studio lighting and composition. Alana spent independent time developing these new found skills in the studio, which resulted in some fantastic self-portraits.

Sherri Jean McCulloch

Vintage French linens became ‘canvas’ for Sherri Jean McCulloch during her 4 week residency and colour exploded in our studio. Sherri’s paintings were developed intuitively, drawing from all of her senses and clearly showing the inspirations of her surroundings here in South West France, from the fortified Bastides to the stripes of the vineyards.

French cinema has had a profound influence on the work of Nicolette Daskalakis and is the reason she found herself drawn to Studio Faire in South West France as the ideal location for her 4-week residency. For Wendy Rolt, a residency at Studio Faire meant a focused period of time to prioritise her artwork, away from her usual daily work with the charity she founded for women from difficult and broken backgrounds in East London. A time to read, sketch and paint new ideas relating ‘our internal to our external being’ and to experiment with how she might express this through abstract painting.

Victoria Negri

The main purpose of Victoria Negri’s 1-week residency was to focus on the script for her second feature film, ‘Ultra’. She sees this film as an expansion of her first film, ‘Gold Star’ (which Victoria starred in alongside Robert Vaughn and Catherine Curtin). Victoria successfully managed to push through major writing blocks she’d been struggling with, allowing her to complete her script during her short residency, much to her delight!

Julie Duffy

Julie Duffy spent her residency researching and drawing inspiration from the dancer, choreographer, teacher and artist, Margaret Morris. In particular, from the ‘Margaret Morris Movement’ (MMM) and it’s crossovers with her own expertise in the Korean Martial Art of Tang Soo Do. On the 23 March, Studio Faire hosted a one off event devised by Duffy, who invited two professional artists to create an improvised performance inspired by her art installation.

Lilli Huttula
Finnish Dancer
Lilli Huttula is an amazingly versatile dancer, dance teacher and choreographer, primarily focusing on three different street dance styles: house, hip hop and voguing. During her 4-week residency at Studio Faire, she focused predominantly on developing a new solo performance piece, which tells a story of a personal experience through a dance performance.

Holly Rhame visited Studio Faire to experiment predominantly with paint, colour, texture and scale, and drew inspiration from her imagination and the figure. Brittany Loar

The main goal of Brittany Loar’s residency was to have time and space to focus on her fine art in order to create a new body of work that she could exhibit on her return. As a full time Senior Designer at an agency in Boston she has little time left over to dedicate to her artwork. Brittany fully immersed herself in her creative activities during her residency, being consistently found drawing, painting and thinking in our ‘garage’ studio.

Meredith Alloway

Meredith Alloway’s residency’s main focus was to work on her next feature script, but she got more out of it than she’d bargained for when two other short film scripts started to develop during her initial research into the history of the area. The feature script she predominantly worked on was a development of her pilot for a horror series called ‘Deep Tissue’. Studio Faire organised a test screening of this new short film to our own private audience in Nérac, along with her debut short film ‘Interior Teresa’.

Alan McGowan

In 2012 Alan McGowan published ‘The Language of the Body: Figure Drawings in Four Chapters.’ and in 2017 ‘Unstill Life; Paintings, Drawings and Writing.’ These publications not only demonstrate Alan’s fabulous figurative oil paintings but also written quotes, thoughts and observations. Alan focused his residency at Studio Faire on developing his writing, with a continued spotlight on the figure in art. He intends to edit these after his return and develop a new publication.

Brigid Collins

In order to make the most of her seven-day residency, Brigid Collins immediately started to gather natural objects of inspiration from the surrounding area, the local farmer’s market and the gardens here at Studio Faire. For the rest of the week, she could be found in various locations around the garden, standing in the sunshine, submerged in these objects and creating beautiful watercolour paintings and mixed media studies.

Sarah Gittins
Scottish Printmaker
Sarah Gittins chose to split her four-week residency into two shorter visits and, for this first fortnight, she predominantly spent time at Chateau du Frandat, a vineyard and orchard just ten-minutes bike ride from Studio Faire. Her project is focused on the history, cultivation and celebration of plum growing in this region and, during this visit, Sarah was able to watch the plums ripen and then, experience the beginnings of the harvesting process.

Elín Gunnlaugsdóttir
Icelandic Musician & Composer
Elín Gunnlaugsdóttir’s residency involved recording environmental sounds and developing these into musical compositions on her computer. The theme of one of her compositions was Thoreau’s Walden, which will be premiered in Iceland in October and also some theatre music that will be premiered in Iceland in November 2018.

Justine Gaubert

Justine Gaubert visited Studio Faire with her creative partner Vicky (see below) to develop a collaborative project that focuses on neurodiversity, in particular, exploring all things Aspergers. They considered their own personal triggers and personal experiences as creative women in their 40’s and also helpful strategies to share with others. They began developing a website whilst at Studio Faire, with support from Colin, and intend to launch this very soon.

Robin Gee
African American Choreographer & Dancer
Robin Gee came to Studio Faire in order to develop [movement] material for a screen dance inspired by the local environment. Even though she has a fantastic studio space at UNC Greensboro, where she is Associate professor, she feels it’s necessary for her to remove herself from her place of work for the ideas to really start to flow, without distraction, both physical and mental. This is why a residency at Studio Faire was so valuable for her development at this point in time.

Karl Stern
Scottish Painter & Printmaker
Karl Stern used his residency to develop a new body of work. He has a rare approach to creating his works of art, initially he created collographic plates, which he then painted into. These will be finished off during the printing process after his residency. The images he created were inspired by the characters, buildings and landscapes in and around Nérac. They all reflected Karl’s interest in people and his environment.
